AN OPEN LETTER TO THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE FAMILY

March 12, 2012

I, Johnny Sims, a retired United States Park Ranger, submit this appeal on behalf of my friend, retired Park Ranger, Arthur (Tobie) Jackson.

Tobie was hospitalized in July 2011and underwent a hi-femoral bypass. He was readmitted in November due to complications from the previous bypass. He was again hospitalized on December 30th, resulting amputation of his left leg above the knee and partial amputation of his right foot, due to peripheral vascular disease.

He has survived six (6) operations and is currently recuperating at the Baton Rouge General Hospital, Mid-City location.

I am seeking volunteers within the NPS family to offer financial and physical support to Tobie and his family. Contributions may be made to the Arthur L. Jackson Benefit Account, at Regions Bank, 265

Devereaux Drive, Natchez, Mississippi, 39120, routing number 065305436 and account number: 0168608977. The telephone number for Regions Bank is (800)734-4667.

Contributions may be made at any branch of Regions Bank or be sent directly to the family at: P. 0. Box 464, Washington, Mississippi 39190.

Donors are asked to provide a name and email address so we can create a donor list and provide updates on Tobie’s progress. You may contact me at (323)842-9503 or email address twobfreeinc@yahoo.com.

Please feel free to forward this email to other members of the National Park Service family. Thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration.

Johnny Sims

Acadia National Park (ME)
Park Employee Seriously Injured In Accident

Lynne Dominy, the park’s chief of interpretation, was en route to a meeting at the Schoodic Education and Research Center on the morning of Saturday, March 31st, when her vehicle was hit by an oncoming car that had crossed the center line. The NPS Ford Fusion she was driving was completely destroyed and Lynne was trapped inside for almost an hour before being airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Lynne suffered numerous broken bones, but apparently sustained no organ, brain or spinal cord damage. She has had two of three surgeries and remains in intensive care. The prognosis is that she will likely be in the hospital for six weeks. State troopers reported that she probably would not have survived if she hadn’t taken the evasive action she did. The two occupants of the other vehicle were killed instantly. No determination has yet been made as to why the other car crossed the center line. Maine State Police are investigating. Lynne’s husband, Brian Dominy, is the law enforcement specialist at Acadia and they have two school-age children. Cards and letters may be sent to the Dominys by way of Brian Dominy, Acadia National Park, P.O. Box 177, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
Ammunition Malfunction Notice Issued

During firearms training at a park on February 8th, a round malfunctioned, resulting in a fragment of the bullet embedding itself in the thumb of the ranger next to the shooter.

The cause of the round fragmenting is uncertain but the incident has been reported to the ammunition company. The ranger received three stitches in his thumb but is otherwise fine.

The ammunition is Winchester Ranger RA9T 9mm 147 grain T-series, lot number 30EG81. The lot number is ink-stamped on the inside of the right tuck flap on 20-round boxes, and ink stamped on the end of the cardboard cases.

Please check the ammunition in your park and inform Jill Kinney, firearms program manager, if you find ammunition with this lot number. She can be reached at 912-261-3762.
